New Policy Papers & Position Statements

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is lifesaving in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and has been shown to improve quality of life when performed electively in appropriate patients. Initially PCI was performed at clinical sites with surgical backup due to high rates of complication and urgent surgery. As experience, technology and techniques have improved, the need for emergency surgery has declined. The policy guidance document outlines some of the AHA’s suggestions for policy concerning PCI without surgical back up.
